Local charity Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) has begun accepting applications for the 17th edition of its Leadership Richmond—Youth Now program, which kicks off in September.

The year-long program, funded by the Government of Canada’s Canada Service Corps, gives high school graduates under the age of 28 an opportunity to learn and grow as community leaders while serving on a non-profit board of directors.

“Youth are the future of our community, but their voice matters today as well,” says Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG. “We provide a supportive environment where they can develop their leadership skills and have an immediate impact on causes they care about.”

In the program, each youth leader is matched with a local non-profit organization, where, under guidance from a mentor, they participate as a full board member.

Program participants also take part in a series of leadership conferences, on topics like strategic planning, fund development, board governance, and more.

Finally, the youth leaders collaborate with their organizations on individual community service projects, giving them a chance to take what they’ve learned and put it into practice.

Damanpreet Garcha, a graduate of the most recent Youth Now cohort, served on the board of the City Centre Community Association, where, just five months into her placement, she was asked to become chair of the organization’s marketing committee.

“For me, as a recent marketing graduate, the value of such an opportunity is indescribable, and it probably would not have happened had I not joined Youth Now,” says Garcha.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program has moved entirely online, with events, conferences, and networking sessions all happening virtually.

“Community building has not stopped during the pandemic, and neither has the Youth Now program,” says Gavsie. “It’s more important than ever that youth have a voice, because their ideas will help shape Richmond’s future.”

Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) is a registered charity that serves as a hub for volunteering and giving. RCRG is also a direct service provider, operating a Child Care Resource & Referral Centre, the Richmond Christmas Fund, and a variety of Seniors Community Support Services.
